Homemade Helicopter: Nigerian Man Builds Working Helicopters from Junk

A 24-year-old undergraduate from Nigeria is building helicopters out of old car and bike parts. Mubarak Muhammed Abdullahi, a physics student, spent eight months building the yellow model seen here, using the money he makes from repairing cellphones and computers. While some of the parts have been sourced from a crashed 747, the chopper contains all sorts of surprises.

From his beginnings as a sidewalk preacher protesting the corporate redevelopment of Times Square in New York City to his trenchant anti-war, anti-empire actions today, Reverend Billy (pseudonym of artist-activist Bill Talen) has taken his theatrical activism to a range of sites which he calls "contested spaces": those urban sites that have been recently commodified, commercialized, gentrified or placed under state or police surveillance. In this vein, he has staged numerous "Shopping Interventions" in which he, along with prime collaborator Savitri D and the artists in "the Stop Shopping Choir," often perform in transnational corporate spaces themselves—from the Disney Store to Starbucks—in an effort to intervene in the seamless corporate architecture and choreography of shopping, or to "re-narrate" them with alternate forms of sociality and with the memories of the lives they displace.

On Black Friday, Americans are expected to flock to the malls and shopping centers, eager for discounts, armed with plastic. Business analysts fill the airwaves with predictions on how the fickle consumer will perform, how fuel prices and the subprime mortgage crisis will impact holiday shopping. Black Friday is followed by “Cyber Monday,” a name coined by the retail industry to hype online shopping. Listening to the business news, one would conclude that the future not only of the U.S. economy but of humanity itself depends on mass, frenzied shopping for the holidays.
