The picture on the right is of tonight's Italian ice cream dinner. But actually I wanted to show off the paper napkins---they are ultra thin. In fact, I always thought the ice cream dealers were being cheap but they all offer such bare minimum mouth and hand wiping utensils. And the more I think about it I really don't need a napkin most of the times.
The other day I was pondering if Electric hand dryers are more economical than Paper towels. Well, according to the the green lantern over at slate.com that say:
“Both hand dryers and paper towels carry an environmental cost, so the Lantern's peers typically advise folks to wipe their hands on their trousers. But if you fancy yourself too classy to walk around in damp pants, then hand dryers are, indeed, the greener option—not because they necessarily prevent deforestation, but because they actually use less energy once everything's taken into account.”
Now you probably are asking what brought this on. Well, it started at work for the washrooms lack a electric dryer but instead a reliance on paper towels and it constant resupply is becoming an issue.
With that written, I plan on moving forward with a request to install the more economical dryers but I must find some time to do it. All and all, it just makes sense not to waste valuable resources at work or at home. In fact, I even visited a local McDonald's restaurant to check out their model and how they were handling the hand dying situation. Check out the pictures taken with the Nokia N82 multimedia computer.
My question to my fellow voxers is: have you experienced a similar situation that needed correction?
Today while I was paying for my gasoline at the local Esso station I picked up this very useful brochure concerning fuel efficiency. The website is www.savemorethanfuel.eu
A English translation of the top 10 tips is provide below however a slew of other Euro zone languages are available at the website. I hope it is helpful to someone that gives a damn.
1. Keep your car well serviced and check the oil level regularly.
Correctly maintained cars can operate more efficiently and help reduce CO2 emissions.
2. Check your tyre pressure every month. Under-infl ated tyres can
increase fuel consumption by up to 4%*.
3. Remove unnecessary weight from your boot or back seats. The
heavier the car, the harder the engine has to work and the more
fuel it consumes.
4. Close your windows, especially at higher speeds, and remove
empty roof racks. This will reduce wind resistance and can lower
your fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 10%**.
5. Use air conditioning only when necessary. Unnecessary use
increases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 5%**.
6. Start driving soon after starting the engine and turn off the
engine when stationary for more than one minute. Modern
engines enable you to just get in and go, thus reducing fuel
consumption.
7. Drive at reasonable speeds and above all, drive smoothly.
Every time you accelerate or brake suddenly, your engine uses
more fuel and produces more CO2.
8. When accelerating, change up gears as early as possible. Higher
gears are more economical in terms of fuel consumption**.
9. Try to anticipate traffic flow. Look at the traffic as far ahead as
possible in order to avoid unnecessary stopping and starting
within the fl ow of traffic.
10. Consider car sharing for work or leisure. You will help reduce
congestion and fuel consumption.
Plant-Me Pets
What I really like about this gift is "If and when you get tired of looking at your Plant-Me Pet on your desk or shelf, you can literally bury the sculpture in a pot of soil (head-first, so as to cover the seeds), water it and place it in the sun, and -- voilá! -- the rubber will decompose and a plant will sprout". And this will only set one back a mere $20.00.
I have never grown a pumpkin before, therefore I may just buy one for myself for a before and after pictures set that would go along with the initial gift.
All of these temporary Christmas tree owners are guilty of
crimes against the environment (tree murder by way of accessory). And just
think, this mass murder happens year after year. We humans need to grow up and
stop this madness. How about planting a tree in ones yard that will be enjoyed year after year.
These poor helpless trees (cut down in their prime between
12 to 15 years) will be hauled away this morning 14 January 2008. May they Rest
in Peace.
